Floods

Floods are a big deal. They reshape our perceptions of the very ground we walk on. They create drama and leave trauma behind when the waters recede. Increased flooding may be one of the most immediately visible and tangible impacts of climate change in the Upper Valley. While it may not seem immediately obvious how to take action on flooding, there is actually quite a bit we can do.

Floods Topic Champion - Rudi Ruddell of White River Partnership

The White River Partnership (WRP) is a membership-based, 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization formed in 1996 by a group of local people who shared common concerns about the long-term health of the White River and its watershed.

The WRP envisions a White River watershed in which individuals and communities work together to make informed decisions that protect and improve water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, flood resilience, and recreational river access.

How can WRP help?

  • Direct support for educators supporting climate action projects

  • Wide network of collaborators: Partnership is the important part of our name

  • Equipment for loan, background lesson plans available

  • Access to on-the-ground examples of project implementation

What projects can we do?

  • Monitoring the White River units can be tailored to address individual school goals.

  • Crayfish – key members of river and riparian food webs and invasive species

  • Waterbugs (aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates) – indicators of river health and water quality

  • Winter Track & Sign – evidence of wildlife activities along river corridors

  • Trout in the Classroom – what’s needed for survival of this keystone (with Trout Unlimited)

  • Snorkeling – in-depth exploration of the inhabitants of the pools and riffles of a restored stream (with the US Forest Service)

  • Watershed Restoration – on-the-ground projects that improve water quality and habitat:

    • Culvert replacements/retrofits

    • Trees and shrubs, riparian buffers, propagation and planting plans

    • Alternative stream bank restoration projects
