Building an Environmentally Literate New Hampshire

The 2026 New Hampshire Environmental Literacy Plan (NHELP) provides a shared vision for ensuring every learner has opportunities to connect with the natural world through meaningful, place-based experiences. Developed with input from educators, nonprofits, state agencies, community organizations, and other partners, the plan serves as a roadmap for expanding access to high-quality environmental learning across New Hampshire.

For the Upper Valley Teaching Place Collaborative (UVTPC), this work aligns naturally with our mission. Strong partnerships between schools and community organizations are at the heart of both place-based education and environmental literacy. Whether it's exploring local watersheds, partnering with conservation organizations, or engaging students in community stewardship, every collaboration helps build the knowledge, skills, and connections that strengthen both learners and communities.

One way to see the plan in action is through #NHELPinAction, an ongoing news series highlighting environmental literacy efforts from across New Hampshire. From outdoor classrooms and youth-led stewardship projects to innovative school-community partnerships, these stories celebrate what's possible when learning is connected to place—and offer ideas that can be adapted in communities across the state.
