Funded effort for one Upper Valley middle or high school, fall 2026 semester
Problem: Harm and Waste of Unnecessary Idling
Many vehicles idle while waiting through the dismissal period
Solution: Student-Led Effort to Mitigate the Issue
Schools Are Not Drive-Thrus project: a four-step idle-free study/campaign over six to 10 weeks in a school semester
Step 1: Presentation/Training Session in the Classroom
Step 2: Measure Amount of Idling Occurring at Dismissal
For three afternoons, students collect data on waiting vehicles
Step 3: School Administration Supports the Campaign
Announces effort in school community and installs provided idle-free zone signs
Step 4: Driver Contact Event
For two afternoons, students discuss the benefits of idle reduction with drivers
How a Difference is Made
• Reductions in fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions
• People’s health—particularly of students—is protected
• Students learn organizational, analytical and communication skills and take pride in making a difference in their school community
• Motorists potentially apply idle reduction benefits beyond the school
