VT Climate Education Bill in the News!

A recent article by Kate Kampner (Community News Service), published February 19, 2026 in The Charlotte News, highlights S.175—a bill that would support climate change education across Vermont public schools.

Introduced by Anne Watson, the bill would direct the Vermont Secretary of Education to develop climate change curriculum for elementary and secondary schools. The proposal is intended to serve as a resource and roadmap for educators, rather than a mandate, helping teachers feel supported in bringing climate learning into their classrooms.

We’re glad to see educator voices at the center of this conversation. Joan Haley, UVTPC Program Director and Principal & Co-Founder of Education for Climate Resilience, is quoted in the article, emphasizing the importance of pairing climate education goals with meaningful professional development and educator support. VEEN, a partner organization of UVTPC, is also represented through educator perspectives shared in the piece.

As Joan notes, “I’m thrilled to see climate change education on the radar of Vermont legislators. We owe this to our youth.”

UVTPC will continue to follow this legislation and support collaborative efforts that strengthen climate and place-based learning across the Upper Valley.
